How the space is divided

The plan is a 40′ × 40′ single-story ranch. The Great Room (11′10″ × 29′2″) and Kitchen (9′6″ × 20′8″) share a long 6.3 m wall, with the Dining Area (11′10″ × 10′10″) adjacent to the Great Room and Bathroom 1. The three bedrooms are each 11′10″ wide, with Bedroom 2 and Bedroom 3 both 12′10″ deep, and they all open onto a long Hall (6′11″ × 40′). The Mudroom (9′6″ × 6′11″) sits between the Kitchen and Bathroom 1, sharing walls with both.

Who this layout suits

This plan suits a family wanting single-level living with separate sleeping and living zones. The Great Room at 345 ft² is generous for entertaining, and the Kitchen at 197 ft² with attached Dining Area at 128 ft² provides a defined meal space. Three bedrooms at 171 ft² and 151 ft² each are adequate for children or guests, and the Mudroom at 66 ft² offers a practical entry buffer. The long Hall (276 ft²) connects all rooms but uses space that could otherwise be living area.

How to adapt it

Widening the Kitchen from 2.9 m to 3.6 m by taking space from the Mudroom (2.9 m × 2.1 m) would make the Kitchen 3.6 m × 6.3 m but shrink the Mudroom to 2.1 m × 2.1 m. Merging the Dining Area (3.6 m × 3.3 m) with the Great Room (3.6 m × 8.9 m) by removing the door between them would create one 3.6 m × 12.2 m space, but lose the separate dining area. The Hall (2.1 m × 12.2 m) could be narrowed to 1.5 m wide to add 0.6 m depth to the adjacent bedrooms (Bedroom 1 at 3.6 m × 4.4 m, Bedroom 2 at 3.6 m × 3.9 m, Bedroom 3 at 3.6 m × 3.9 m), but would reduce circulation space.
